The liturgical veneration of Savonarola was interrupted in the first half of the seventeeth century...

The same year Luotto published Il Vero Savonarola e il Savonarola di L. Pastor, Ludovico Ferretti, O.P. published he pamphlet Per la Causa di G. Savonarola - Fatti e testimonianze (Milan 1897).

With such precedents, the fourth centenary of the death (1898) was a propitious occasion for commemorating the son of Ferrara and the reformer of Florence with broad, clear horizons, on a high level.

First Giovanni Lottini, O.P., then Commissioner of the Holy Office, published a study Fu veramente scomunicato il Savonolara? [Was Savonarola Really Excommunicated?] (Milan 1898), which concluded in the negative.

The magazine promotes the rehabilitation of the Friar, by making known his life and writings. Already 20 years before (1878) the Ven. Cesare Guasti of Prato had proposed to the Dominican Order a new and complete edition of the works of Savonarola in Italian.8
